24 04 2008

Penfield \'Color Block\' Jackets & Shirts

Penfield used to be known mainly for their more sober outdoor gear, but in recent times they’ve been making successful forays into less traditional territory as well. Following on from collaboratons with Stussy, Alife and DPMHI, the brand is now building on its solid base of technical expertise to produce a wider range of interesting casual clothing that sits nicely alongside their more classic pieces. Highlights among their new products include hickory striped bags, a new DPM jacket that zips into a sleeping bag and these shirts and jackets that play around with colours and fabrics to put a new spin on a couple of old classics. The Colour Block jacket and Tillson check shirts will be available this coming September (though if the spring weather in the UK is anything to go by they’d be just as useful now…). Today, It\'s Not My Day

This was a great expressive shirt photo I saw on Flickr. I thought the photography really helped to express the mood through the perfectly lighted black & white photo. The look on the models face really says “today sucks.”

Power Shirt charges gadgets as you walk

Power Shirt charges gadgets as you walk

While there are some devices out there that can get juiced up by the sun using solar panels, that’s really not all that convenient. What about when you’re inside? When it’s cloudy? There’s got to be an even more convenient way.

There is! It’s the power shirt, a shirt infused with nanotechnology that’s able to get power from the basic movements of your body, transferring that energy to the gadget of your choice. It’s still in the early stages of development, but eventually you might be wearing shirts with USB jacks built in, intentionally walking briskly to keep your cellphone from dying. The future is so crazy! [via DVICE]

Nissan Uses Senior Suit To Build Cars

Nissan Uses Senior Suit To Build Cars

Planning for your old age? Designers in Japan are.

Carmaker Nissan Motor is using a specialized driver’s suit and goggles to simulate the bad balance, stiff joints, weaker eyesight and extra five kilograms (11lbs) that may accompany senior citizenry.

Associate chief designer Etsuhiro Watanabe says the suit’s weight and constriction help in determining functionality and accessibility within cars by putting young designers not only in the minds of the mobility-challenged, but also in their bodies.

“Difficulty in walking, back pains, trouble in lifting arms — we wanted to consider assorted infirmities,” said Watanabe of the concept known as universal design.

“It’s easy to do this for the young, but we wanted to design for adverse conditions and see what modifications are needed.”

An ageing suit was first used by Nissan a decade ago, while Japanese washlet maker Toto uses such suits to simulate bathroom mobility, even including tub water as part of the program.

Launched in a rapidly graying nation where over 40 percent of the population is expected to be over 65 age by mid-century, the design strategy also aims to find traction abroad.

Over 40 percent of Nissan’s Japanese and U.S. sales are to customers over 50 years old, according to the company.

Nissan says the suit and glasses help decide dashboard angles and visibility issues, as well as driver space and support.

“It’s very difficult to drive, says Nissan’s Naoki Yamamoto after a turn at the wheel in a suit that runs from neck to feet.

“You lose the freedom you’re accustomed to, and while you can move, there are limitations, such as turning the steering wheel or switching on the blinker.”

Universal design is not just for the elderly, as larger drivers with space and mobility concerns also look for greater access and share of the road. [via Reuters]

‘If I Were King’: How Diddy Does It All

10 04 2008

Diddy brings his Midas touch to just about every venture. He’s made music, bands, movies, fashion, vodka, J. Lo… the list goes on and on. Some people call him an icon, I like to call him King Combs (cuz it sounds kinda like King Kong). MTV aired a documentary on the royal homeslicelast night at 10pm.

How Diddy Does It All

If I Were King chronicles Diddy’s daily life as he prepares for his Sean John menswear line’s runway show at Fashion Week in NYC. After five years on the industry DL, Diddy wants to get his swagger back and impress fashion bad-boys Posen, Cavalli, and Rodriguez. The doc also lends some insight into how Diddy became such a success and why no one dares to say “no” to him. Seriously, he’s one scary, anal, make-you-wanna-bawl boss. As one of his employees says, “There’s no Sean John show without tears. There’s no Sean Jean show without someone storming out.” Sounds like an hour-long special of The Hills, minus all the white chicks.

So make sure you tune in for the show. The King is watching you…

Nike Gyrizo BMX Dunk

10 04 2008

Nike Gyrizo BMX Dunk

We present you one of the most interesting releases by Nike to be coming out this summer. Just this morning we presented the Hyperdunk, the lightest basketball shoe to ever be produced by Nike, and here comes some more heat now. Once again the brand shows its drive to innovation and presents with the Dunk Gyrizo an interesting and practical product for anybody interesting in biking.

Nike Gyrizo BMX Dunk 2

BMX, or Bicycle Moto Cross is the non-motorized version of motocross, but also includes freestyle and jumping. The sport is making its Olympic debut in Beijing this August and Nike athletes will be outfitted in innovative footwear and uniforms.

Nike Gyrizo BMX Dunk 3

“Looks like a dunk, but acts like Lance’s cleat.” That statement sums up the power and impact of the Nike Dunk Gyrizo, a shoe specifically designed for BMX racing. The Gyrizo, which is Greek for wheel, is actually built on the same cycling last as Lance Armstrong’s cleat. The external portion of the shoe looks like Nike’s wildly popular Dunk model, but the design of the internal plate transfers power in the up and down strokes of the rider. A strap on the upper and a lace pocket keep laces out of the rider’s spokes while a durable outsole compound was integrated to accommodate a wider bike pedal. Kevlar lace and metal grommets are also used to maximize durability. Rubber and thinner midsole on the shoe allow a rider to walk easily before and after races.

The outcome is a shoe that does not only look good, but is functional at the same time, and more you cannot ask for. We also hear rumors, that the design of the shoe has been done by TET of WTAPS.

For the ladies, this is an exciting new collaboration between Reebok, Married to the Mob and Colette. This hot project has been in the works for a while now and it’s now officially a reality!

MOB x Colette x Reebok Freestyle 2

The first thing you notice when looking at these shoes are the Married to the Mob lips that dominate the look. The lips are used freely throughout the shoe and stand out well against the white background.

MOB x Colette x Reebok Freestyle 3

While these shoes utilize mostly red and white, there is a hint of pink involved as well. Obviously, this collaboration isn’t for everyone but if you like rocking red and white, you may have found a new pair for your shoe collection.
