Penfield ‘Color Block’ Jackets & Shirts
24 04 2008Penfield used to be known mainly for their more sober outdoor gear, but in recent times they’ve been making successful forays into less traditional territory as well. Following on from collaboratons with Stussy, Alife and DPMHI, the brand is now building on its solid base of technical expertise to produce a wider range of interesting casual clothing that sits nicely alongside their more classic pieces. Highlights among their new products include hickory striped bags, a new DPM jacket that zips into a sleeping bag and these shirts and jackets that play around with colours and fabrics to put a new spin on a couple of old classics. The Colour Block jacket and Tillson check shirts will be available this coming September (though if the spring weather in the UK is anything to go by they’d be just as useful now…). [via Slam X Hype]

Today, It’s Not My Day
19 04 2008This was a great expressive shirt photo I saw on Flickr. I thought the photography really helped to express the mood through the perfectly lighted black & white photo. The look on the models face really says “today sucks.”

Adidas Presents: The Left Right Project
17 04 2008In the never-ending battle of west coast vs. east coast, Adidas looked to two creative factions, the east coast’s Surface to Air and the west coast’s Sam Flores (of Upper Playground) to wage artistic battle on a pair of 15 foot long adidas Superstars. Sam Flores received the left shoe while Surface to Air took the right. The video seen here documents the journey from each end as they met together to compare results in Venice Beach. [via HypeBeast]

Courvoisier and LRG Promo iPhone etc.
17 04 2008On collaborations I didn’t see coming… Courvoisier is going all out on their new Exclusif Cognac! Including a multi-city tour (LA, SF, Houston, Miami, NY) this spring to show off an exclusive line designed by urban/skate brand LRG, inspired by Courvoisier… including a Napoleon Rubberband Jacket.
Ok, but seriously, we both know that’s not why I’m posting this. What grabbed me is that they even customized some limited edition gadgetry – iPhones, Blackberries, and iPods to be specific, and I’m surprised, but I’m kind of loving the the napoleonic/spy logo thing thats going on, and while orange isn’t usually my color, this shade is kind of interesting on electronics… check out more sneak peeks after the jump! Power Shirt charges gadgets as you walk
16 04 2008While there are some devices out there that can get juiced up by the sun using solar panels, that’s really not all that convenient. What about when you’re inside? When it’s cloudy? There’s got to be an even more convenient way.
There is! It’s the power shirt, a shirt infused with nanotechnology that’s able to get power from the basic movements of your body, transferring that energy to the gadget of your choice. It’s still in the early stages of development, but eventually you might be wearing shirts with USB jacks built in, intentionally walking briskly to keep your cellphone from dying. The future is so crazy! [via DVICE]

Nissan Uses Senior Suit To Build Cars
16 04 2008Planning for your old age? Designers in Japan are.
Carmaker Nissan Motor is using a specialized driver’s suit and goggles to simulate the bad balance, stiff joints, weaker eyesight and extra five kilograms (11lbs) that may accompany senior citizenry.
Associate chief designer Etsuhiro Watanabe says the suit’s weight and constriction help in determining functionality and accessibility within cars by putting young designers not only in the minds of the mobility-challenged, but also in their bodies.
“Difficulty in walking, back pains, trouble in lifting arms — we wanted to consider assorted infirmities,” said Watanabe of the concept known as universal design.
“It’s easy to do this for the young, but we wanted to design for adverse conditions and see what modifications are needed.”
An ageing suit was first used by Nissan a decade ago, while Japanese washlet maker Toto uses such suits to simulate bathroom mobility, even including tub water as part of the program.
Launched in a rapidly graying nation where over 40 percent of the population is expected to be over 65 age by mid-century, the design strategy also aims to find traction abroad.
Over 40 percent of Nissan’s Japanese and U.S. sales are to customers over 50 years old, according to the company.
Nissan says the suit and glasses help decide dashboard angles and visibility issues, as well as driver space and support.
“It’s very difficult to drive, says Nissan’s Naoki Yamamoto after a turn at the wheel in a suit that runs from neck to feet.
“You lose the freedom you’re accustomed to, and while you can move, there are limitations, such as turning the steering wheel or switching on the blinker.”
Universal design is not just for the elderly, as larger drivers with space and mobility concerns also look for greater access and share of the road. [via Reuters]

MOB x Colette x Reebok Freestyle
10 04 2008For the ladies, this is an exciting new collaboration between Reebok, Married to the Mob and Colette. This hot project has been in the works for a while now and it’s now officially a reality!
The first thing you notice when looking at these shoes are the Married to the Mob lips that dominate the look. The lips are used freely throughout the shoe and stand out well against the white background.
While these shoes utilize mostly red and white, there is a hint of pink involved as well. Obviously, this collaboration isn’t for everyone but if you like rocking red and white, you may have found a new pair for your shoe collection.
This collaboration is schedule to drop this month at Colette, no word on NYC availability. Via Sneaker News.

We are in a state of perpetual war C with ourselves and with the eco-system that sustains us. Perpetual war breeds perpetual fear.
